We leave the church building inspired and filled with Truth and encouragement each Sunday … and somewhere along the course of the week, often we find ourselves in need of a little bit of something to help us through.

Welcome to Extra Strength: a mid-week pick-you-up for the soul. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom for extra encouragement and challenge.

Extra Strength

Listen to Vacancy from Sunday, April 5 2015

By John Worth, Immanuel attendee and blogger

“The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead!” Luke 24:5-6

“Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive?” the angel asked, as if the women should have known better. I mean where else would have someone looked? I mean where would you have looked?

blog 4.6.15 John 1010The women and Jesus’ other followers watched his lifeless body be taken down from the cross. They probably even followed behind as his body was hastily wrapped in linen, put into a borrowed tomb and shut away from the world on that sad Friday.

I’ve been thinking about that question the angle asked the women a whole lot myself this week. Why do I sometimes find myself searching for live among things that are dead?

I have already emerged from that tomb with Jesus, crossing from the death that I’ve earned to life that has been gifted to me. Why then would I think that any sort of life could come from my selfishness, my pride and my stubbornness?

I know Jesus isn’t in that tomb anymore.he can’t taste death ever again; he’s alive, and so am I.

My desire is to walk in the light and the life we have through his death on the cross not to dwell in the darkness and death of the tomb. My prayer is for all of us to live lives reflective of Sunday, walking in the glory of Jesus’s resurrection on that Easter day.

We have been crucified with Christ and share in the new life he has given us.

It’s time to stop living like we’re dead. It’s time to really live.

  1. I originally asked Christ into my heart at the age of 10. But, it was the day I recommitted my life to the Lord after 20 years of living the prodigal life (Luke 15:13) in the darkness, that I felt a burden lifted in me; an incredible relief that I no longer had to carry the weight of what my life had become (Luke 15:16) on my shoulders alone (Matt. 11:28-29). Someone, namely Christ, was now here with me to help me turn my life around & set my feet on solid ground; (Psalm 40:1-3). I came home to Christ as the prodigal son came home to his father with a servants heart (Luke 15:17-19).

Now after 30 years of having walked out of the tomb & into the light of a life with my Lord & Savior, I live & rejoice in Psalms 40:4-5. He has shown me His faithfulness in everything that I have brought to Him. He has changed my critical spirit into a Loves Does spirit, He has shown me how to rebuild the bridges I have burned along the way & given me patience to wait with understanding for other bridges to be rebuilt in His time. He has taught me how to apply & live out scripture in my life everyday, showing me that His Word is true in every area of my life. He has loved me with a love that has brought healing into the most wounded parts of me, He has saved me from myself in every sense of His Word! He has given me a desire to “help others navigate the waters of life.” If He never did another thing for me for the rest of my life, I will live to glorify & honor His Holy Name because of what He has already done for me.

For anyone who is living in the darkness, saved or unsaved, I urge you to walk out of the dark tomb of your life & come into the light of a life with Christ that will show you what it truly means to be loved as God so loved the world. Isaiah 61:1-7

Thank you, John for this opportunity to share, Jill
