You know that Sunday feeling, right?

We leave the church building inspired and filled with Truth and encouragement on Sundays … and somewhere along the course of the week, pieces of the message tend to fade and we often lose that Sunday feeling.

The Monday After {the Sunday Sermon} is our attempt to carry the Sunday message into Monday mornings by walking together and sharing how what we’ve heard on Sunday morning is making a difference in our Mondays, our weeks, our lives. Because of your generosity to Accelerate, we are able to share these stories! Thank you!

The Monday After Sunday, February 2, 2013 {Listen to the message HERE!}

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22

The book of James time and again stands out as one of my favorite — not because it is an “easy” book or has an exhilarating story line, but rather because every time I read it I am both encouraged as well as convicted by James’ words. I think this comes from the “justice”-seeking part of my personality.

So many times I am guilty of what Pastor Joe described this morning as only believing the Bible to the extent that it is reflected in my actions. Too often I have been quick to acknowledge God’s stance on a particular issue and give it a head nod but then the actions of my life reflect the opposite.

God’s word is living; it is, according to Eugene Peterson “a book that reads us as we read it.” God’s word, like a best friend, should never be far from our hearts and minds, and as such we must be doers of the word. Just like faith without deeds is dead, hearing Gods word without life change is barron and fruitless. The Word must have an impact on our thinking and our life in order for our lives to be fruitful.

Looking in the mirror of my life this past Monday morning, Matthew chapters 6 and 7 have been constantly reflected back at me during the past few weeks.

As my wife and I are beginning the process of adopting a 12-year-old girl we hosted in our home this winter, truth like giving to the needy, building our lives on the rock, asking, seeking and knocking and considering where my treasures are stored are front and center in my thoughts; as I ponder His Word, I feel an invitation to act upon the truths He is pressing into my heart and mind.

Day in and day out it seems God is making known these truths. First I read them, then God brings them to mind throughout the day and at the same time challenges me to put them into practice. This living Word follows me throughout my day when I let it and even pleasantly interrupts my day like a call from a friend when I need a break.

Let God speak to you every day through his Word. I, for one, am so looking forward to being in the Word  intentionally for the next 40 days, together as both a church family but also with the living Word, my God.
