by Pam Gillaspie, Immanuel Attendee

I’m a retreat professional.

Bet you didn’t know such a thing existed! I travel around the country speaking at conferences and retreats and my daughter Katie, now 15, travels with me. This past year we’ve been from Minnesota to Ohio to Alaska, but the retreat she won’t miss is the one in Green Lake, Wisconsin!

Katie has attended Immanuel’s Green Lake Getaway every year of her life and her old mother (that’s me) hasn’t missed one of them since, well, the beginning of time. To be honest, there have been years when I’ve thought about taking a pass. Life happens, and retreats aren’t cheap. Add to that when my husband travels on business for most of June the thought of hunkering down at home grows in its appeal.

Every year we faced the choice: To go or not to go? Invest the coin or pocket the money? On one particular trip to Green Lake, however, that all changed for me. Katie announced from the backseat, “Mom, when you’re old and can’t get up here on your own, I’m going to pick you up from the nursing home and bring you to Green Lake with me every year!” In that instant I knew that this had become more than a weekend away. The Green Lake experience was part of the fabric of our family, part of our history. Over the years we had built memories of family, of extended family and of church family that were priceless.

Katie wants me to tell you that you can do this trip much more economically by camping (Can you tell what discussions we often have in our house?), but I want you to know that if you need a clean pillow, your own bathroom and a great place to play games you can join us in the lodge!

Email to register for the Green Lake Getaway or head over to the info circle while you’re at church! Registration begins January 20 and ends February 10, 2013. Green Lake Getaway runs Thursday evening, June 13 through Saturday afternoon, June 15.

Pam Gillaspie, her husband Dave and kids Brad and Katie call Immanuel Church home. Pam is an author and speaker with Precept Ministries International. She also is, indeed, a retreat professional who will most likely be at Green Lake again this summer unprofessionally.

  1. I grew up going to the Immanuel Green Lake Getaway for many years as well (though not all). Last summer I remembered thinking to myself as Betsy and I loaded up our three boys that it was a pretty cool thing to have my sons experience the same summer retreat at Green Lake that I did growing up. Family traditions are great and I’m glad Green Lake is part of ours in particular. We’ll see you there!
